American Dogwood

The American Dogwood is one of those species of plants that are not only a flower but also a tree as well. There are 30 to 50 different varieties of dogwood, ranging from herbaceous to evergreen plants. Most have opposite leaves and a few of them have alternate leaves. The fruit is eaten by birds but is mildly toxic to humans. These plants make very good ornamental yard decorations. Dogwoods have elegance and beauty, making them excellent flowering trees for ornamental qualities. Amazingly enough, the pioneers used this tree to brush their teeth. They would simply peel off the bark, bite the twig and then brush their teeth.
